How To Draw African American Hair Anime Style

Hair is one of my superlative 5 favorite things to describe and color, and this was too a very requested tutorial. I tried to add together as much information every bit possible while keeping the video fun to watch and full of tips!

Naught here is a hard dominion, and it's more often than not to show how I do things, so I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Using references

It'south tough to draw things when you don't check what they wait like in real life. So every time you're stuck, search for photos! Non but of anime drawings, but actual people also.

Where, you ask? There're plenty of places; you tin can keep Pinterest, Instagram, DeviantArt, etc.! And if you remember that's cheating, copying, or stealing, it's not. Every great creative person uses references, and then you should likewise!

Shape and book

Hair and optics in anime are oftentimes used to limited emotions and a character's personality, then they're ordinarily given more details than in real life. Simply this is drawing, so there aren't whatever complex rules for this! Let your hand flow, and practice your creativity. Have a look at your favorite anime drawings. How does the pilus make you feel?

Straight blackness hair feels serious;

while fluffy curls are warm and welcoming!

Sketching tips

I offset hair just thinking of the general outline without giving much attending to details: when sketching, only the general shape matters.

If you don't know where the pilus starts in the head, think of the skull, and add some padding. A simple line in the centre should be enough to represent that. You tin can brand the pinnacle office more complex as you acquire how hair works.

Too, it's good to piece of work with South curves. Even if the hair is straight, information technology tin be a long open S, making the hair expect light and flowy. With wavy pilus, the South curves volition be more visible!

For perfectly curly pilus, I use a different technique. I first draw a spring and define the forepart part. Then, I duplicate that line shape.

Subsequently that, I erase the lines that are on the back and connect them to form a full bound!

You don't need to draw every strand like that (experience free to do so if you like though!), a few will be plenty to give the feeling yous are looking for, and the back can just have a simple shape.

Don't be afraid to delete what looks incorrect and endeavor again. Even if it takes time, spending fourth dimension on this function to get the feeling right will pay off in the end.

Another important tip is to work with long lines, not short chicken scratches. It will brand your cartoon await more polished, and you will have fewer chances to hurt your wrist!

Take breaks if y'all are lost, and await upwards new references to refresh your optics. Make sure to go out them open while you draw; it will help a lot.

About lineart

Depending on the drawing, I will clean upwards the sketch instead of creating lineart.

By "clean up", I mean I will erase the messy lines and get over them when necessary, giving it a unlike feeling than a perfectly clean line. I experience this helps me relax nigh art and not worry too much well-nigh details.

Y'all don't need to over-zoom and glue your face up on the screen to be sure the lines are perfect! To exist quite honest, you are likely to be the merely 1 that will exist able to spot your small mistakes.

The brush for lineart can exist the aforementioned every bit for sketching, simply this will depend on how y'all want it to expect. I highly recommend looking at the standard brushes or checking Clip Studio Avails. In that location are many fun brushes you tin easily download and apply.

In this phase, you can make the lines thicker where they intersect or where shadows will be. It will give your lines more than depth.

Shading

Once y'all accept the base of operations color added, define where your light source is. Recollect your bones lessons virtually ball shading? Practice exactly that.

To do this, lay out a full general shape with the shading colour.

In one case you lot have the general shape defined, yous can polish it until your liking.

But equally y'all are all the same learning, y'all don't demand to become fancy on the shading. Get slowly, inside the telescopic of what yous feel is challenging enough for your current skills, then make it complex equally you get!

As you can see, at that place's some kind of backlight on the blackness that matches the grey on the white side. I commonly add together some actress colour to the hair I describe, considering it looks pretty!

Now, how to selection the correct colour?

Short reply, there is no right colour! Play with them until you observe what you like: try pink in blue, imperial in light-green, orangish in yellow, and so on. Have fun! Wonder how to make black and white hair not look grey, purple, etc.

If you utilize similar colors to your cartoon's surroundings, the tone will look right. For example, if her shirt were red, I would add more blood-red tones to the hair. I tend to utilize colors already on the drawing and playing effectually with them. Like this hair strand in a blueish and red room: in that location's a scrap of each colour on information technology.

Only if you are working with complicated hair similar a rainbow or slope, y'all can set up a new layer on acme in Multiply blending mode, and test out which colors piece of work better without messing up the slope.

Highlights

This part is very fun, and there are many ways to add smoothen to the pilus.

Yes, even white pilus!

I like to airbrush the skin color on the bangs, and so when I add white highlights on peak, information technology will show!

If y'all don't know which colour to use, you can take the hair color, create a new layer, set the blending mode to Add (Glow), and so add blobs, triangles, lines, etc. Any shape works, and so do what fits your taste, and then apply hue and saturation (Ctrl+U) to change the colour to a tone that matches.

When I add highlights, that's when I also add together messy strands. We all struggle with messy hair, right?

Another little thing I savor is making the eyelashes and eyebrows transparent. You lot can easily do that by locking the lineart layer, and then coloring with a color that'southward darker than the pilus, or lighter. Try it out; information technology depends on the hair colour you are using, and if your lineart is set as multiply or non.

Decision

Possibly you're still unsure how to describe hair even after this tutorial, but I don't expect yous to all of a sudden be a pro. As I e'er say, art takes time.

So at the very to the lowest degree, take abroad this important point from this: use references! I tin't echo this enough simply brand sure to use them mindfully.

I believe you don't actually demand a step-by-step to acquire something. Instead, try to sympathize things in your own way. As long equally y'all enjoy what you do and are upward for the challenges life will bring, yous will grow as an artist!

Practicing is key, but patience and passion make upward the door.

Thank you very much for checking it out!

Have a good time drawing ☆ ~('▽^人)
